Meet your new favorite five-minute project: a delicate little star stitch bookmark that looks like it took hours but actually uses less than 20 yards of yarn. If you’ve got scrap cotton sitting in your stash and 20 spare minutes, this is the pattern for you.
This bookmark works up in a soft, textured fabric thanks to the star stitch , a stitch that looks intimidating in photos but is genuinely beginner-friendly once you get the rhythm down. Add a little tassel at the top, and you’ve got a bookmark that’s equal parts pretty and practical (and makes a seriously cute handmade gift for the reader in your life).

Pattern
Row 1 is the right side, Row 2 is the wrong side.
Ch 33 (or any multiple of 2, plus 5).
Row 1:
Work your first star stitch: yarn over and pull up a loop in the 2nd chain from the hook, then pull up a loop in each of the next 3 chains (6 loops on the hook), yarn over and draw through all 6 loops, then chain 1 to close the stitch โ this little chain-1 loop is the “eye” of the star.
For every stitch after that: pull up a loop in the eye of the last stitch, then in its “leg,” then in the chain that closed it, then in each of the next 2 unworked chains ,that’s 6 loops on the hook again , yarn over and pull through all 6, chain 1 to close. Repeat this across the row until you reach the end. You should finish with 15 star stitches.
Row 2:
Turn your work , no turning chain needed. Work 2 single crochets into the eye of each star stitch across the row, for a total of 30 single crochets. Slip stitch into the side of your very first stitch from Row 1 to close it off, then fasten off and weave in your ends.

Adding the Tassel
- Wrap yarn around a 2.5″ piece of cardboard about 7 times.
- Slide a 5″ strand of yarn underneath the wraps and tie it in a double knot.
- Cut the yarn along the bottom edge of the cardboard.
- Wrap another 5″ strand around the top of the tassel to shape it, then knot twice to secure.
- Thread the tail through the top of your bookmark with a yarn needle, knot it in place, weave in the end, and trim.
Blocking Tip
Star stitch fabric loves to curl before it’s blocked, so don’t skip this step. Pin your bookmark (and tassel) flat onto a blocking mat or piece of cardboard, lightly steam or mist it with water, pat it into place, and let it dry completely before unpinning. It’ll lie perfectly flat afterward.
